When filial piety and political necessity force Sadahira to join the treacherous Minamoto Yoritomo, he must leave his young wife Toshiko and their children to face her father’s murderous rage alone. Oba Hiromoto has declared a private war against the Yamada family. Toshiko, convinced that her husband has deserted her, is drawn to the darkly charismatic Hachiro, but he, too, leaves her. Destitute and homeless with her children, Toshiko turns in vain to the emperor. In the end, the only work she finds is in the brothels on the Yodo River.
Volume II takes the action to the far reaches of the country as men fight bloody battles and women and children suffer or die. In this book, the Yamada saga takes on epic proportions as it follows the characters to their destiny.

This is the same review that I posted for the first volume of this series. If you read that one, by the same headline, no need to reread.I actually purchased the Hollow Reed Series when it was offered as a trilogy rather than two volumes. Therefore, I can't be positive at exactly what point in the story this new first volume ends. The series provides insight into the lives of the Japanese people in the class system preceding the start of Shogun rule in Japan. We see an era where women didn't have much say about their future and watch the female protagonist, Toshiko Yamada, try to find love and happiness with the court physician, Sadahira Yamada, after fleeing the Emperor Go-Shirakawa's court.
It isn't just Toshiko's story. We also see a glimpse into what the son of a warrior, Sadahira Yamada, who chose another path for his life might have encountered. We meet his adopted children, one of which is Hachiro who I understand is the protagonist in the author's novel The Sword Master. I have it but haven't yet read it. We also follow Sadahira into a war forced upon him.
If a book is written well, I find myself with vivid mental images of the people and era I am reading about. This was the case with The Hollow Reed series. I could visualize the countryside, characters, events and cared about the people. I have now added additional works by the author to my Kindle library and look forward to immersing myself in them as well.

The Hollow Reed vol II Dust Before the Wind edition by IJ Parker Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
The story is lovingly told with such true picturesque detail and keeps the reader engrossed and coming back for more
I liked the characters and the descriptions of the country and divisions of the Capitol.
I would have liked to seen a deeper psychological side to the retired emperor
I've read the other books and was delighted to find one I had not seen before. This is actually more than one "book." A good read, well-plotted and well-written. The characters feel real and the story is compelling.
I have become easily addicted to I J Parker books but sadly have now read them all.
Let's hope I can somehow forget them and then read them all over again. Not a mediocre one among the lot.
I feel as if I know the regular characters personally.
This book finishes the story of Toshika and her older, physician husband Sadahira, and Sadahira's two adopted sons, Hachiro and Sadamu. There are twists and turns to the story line and some surprises. The only disconcerting thing are the proof-reading errors, which gave the impression the author was hurrying to finish the book by a deadine. A glaring and annoying error was the many times the name of Tori appeared as TMri through the story. Other than that, I would definitely recommend this series, especially if you are a fan of books about Japan. In the future, I will probably try a few more books by this author, who seems to be very knowledgeable about Japan.
